MITCHELL Dean C. Smith, 62, Mitchell, passed away at 1:05 p.m. Wednesday, December 30, 2009, after his short, yet courageous and hard fought battle with brain cancer. He was surrounded by family and friends.
Born December 1, 1947, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Roy C. and Helen M. (Schmidt) Smith. He married Debbie (Sullivan) Houchin July 2, 1988.
He was employed in the steel industry and was a founding member of the Castaway Band where he played drums and sang.
Dean was a member and past master of the Bedford Masonic Lodge No. 14, La-Or-Ma Shrine Club, Murat Shrine Club in Indianapolis, and an avid bowler.

His parents; two sisters; and two grandchildren, Allen J. Houchin and Nicole B. Smith, preceded him in death.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 2, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home with Pastor Travis Inman officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2:00-7:00 p.m. Friday and from 9:00 a.m. until the service on Saturday at the funeral home.
A memorial service will be conducted by Bedford Masonic Lodge No. 14 at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
