MITCHELL – Helen C. Applegate, 90, passed away at 4:05 p.m. Friday, June 19, 2015, at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born April 13, 1925, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Victor and Cora (Riggs) Holman.  She married John Applegate December 19, 1946, and he preceded her in death February 21, 1976.

Helen was a homemaker and a graduate of Mitchell High School in 1944.  She was a member of the Jacob Finger United Methodist Church and Phi Beta Psi Sorority.

Surviving:        children, Patricia (Michael) Harris, Bedford
                                    Judy Johnson, Bloomington
                                    John M. (Pat) Applegate, Campbellsburg
                                    Dan (Teresa) Applegate, Bedford
                                    14 grandchildren
                                    18 great grandchildren
                                      2 great great granddaughters

Her parents; husband; and sister, Ruth Ann Winkler, preceded her in death.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Reverend Eric Kersey officiating.  Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday and from 9:30 a.m. until the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Phi Beta Psi Sorority will conduct a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

    Helen used to babysit for me and my brother when we were young. She was one of the kindest women I've ever known. My condolences go out to her entire family. She will be sadly missed, but never forgotten.

    I loved Mammaw very much. I am so sorry to my Dad and Aunts and Uncle for the loss of their dear and sweet Mother. My heart aches for our whole family. God please be with us over the next few days as we lay Mammaw to rest. I love you Mammaw Applegate. Rest in peace.
