MITCHELL — Melvin Norman “Jiggs” Backherms, 76, passed away at 10:55 a.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.
Born March 7, 1938, in Corydon, he was the son of Laurel and Ada Mae (Crone) Backherms. He married Nita Kay Knable April 23, 1960.
He was a project engineer for the Indiana Department of Transportation and retired with 44 years of service. Melvin graduated from Corydon High School in 1957. Chief enjoyed watching all sports, going fishing; taking drives in the country, and being with his family. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.

His parents and siblings, Shirley Backherms and Lonnie Backherms, preceded him in death.
Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 19, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Father Rick Eldred and Deacon Dave Reising officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.
Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Friday and from 9:00 a.m. until the service on Saturday at the funeral home.
