MITCHELL – Myrlen W. Hunter, 81, passed away at 9:30 a.m. Monday, January 21, 2013, at White River Lodge in Bedford.

Born September 4, 1931, in Washington, Indiana, he was the son of M. Victor and Lucille (Jones) Hunter.  He married Sherlia A. Mundy August 14, 1952.

Myrlen graduated from Mitchell High School in 1949, and after serving in the U. S. Navy during the Korean War, he enrolled in Purdue University and graduated in 1958 with a degree in pharmacy.  He owned Burton City Drug Store in Mitchell for several years.

He served as treasurer of the Persimmon Festival and the Mitchell Chamber of Commerce for 18 years and was also a director of the Bedford Regional Medical Center.  He served on the boards of the Marion Township Fire Department, Mitchell High School Alumni Association, Mitchell Public Library, and Hoosier Uplands.  He was a member of the First Christian Church, County, State, and National Pharmacy Associations, American Legion Post No. 250, and a Life Member of Purdue University Alumni. Myrlen was on the board and president of the Lawrence County Health Department.

                                    several nieces and nephews

His parents; great granddaughter, Alexa Karri Doyle; son-in-law, Jim Doyle; father-in- law and mother-in-law, Joe and Vida Mundy; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Joe B. and Josephine Mundy, preceded him in death. 

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 25, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Bro. Mike Collins officiating.  Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery with military honors accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Friends may call 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday and from 10:00 a.m. until the service on Friday at the funeral home.

    Sherlia Sorry to learn of Merln's passing. I have fond memories of Merlin as well as all thr Mundy's. My memories are all smiles - Merlin's comment when I found and reminded him that he paid my Dad (Leland Plew) $5 for marrying you two "best $5 investment I ever nade) Merlin was a comfort to Analee during some pretty ruff times and that was always appreciated.     aunt shirley I am very sorry for your loss when mom told me of his passing i was heartbroken. he was one of my favorite uncles. he always had a good story to tell. he was the smartest man i knew. god needed a leader in heaven and for that it should bring peace we never walk alone god is always with us uncle myrlen will always be with us.

    Sherlia and Family, We were so sorry to get the news of Myrlen's passing away. The memories of our years together came flashing back and the days together in the Navy and the USS Los Angeles. It was also time for Sherlia and Mary Lynne to become friends and supporters. Of course that was followed by our close relationship at Purdue when we all lived in Veteran's Housing. During that period of time we experienced our families increased in size. I will miss the email exchanges we had from time to time. A good friend and "old" Navy Buddy.     Sherlia and family: We were in shock to get the phone call on the death of Myrlen. When we saw him at Billy's services in November he was full of life We were able to sit and chat with him and catch up on family news. He was so proud of all his children. He will be missed by many. The entire family will be in our prayers for everyone to find peace. We hope to see you Thursday / Friday as long as the weather allows us .
