MITCHELL – Sam Ely, 80, passed Wednesday, January 18, 2017, at Richard A. Roudebush VA Hospital in Indianapolis.

Born October 24, 1936, in Lee County, Virginia, he was the son of Nathaniel Ely and Sallie (Scott) Hopper.  He married Shirley Jean Latch May 12, 1962.

Sam retired from Carpenter Body Works.  He played bluegrass music and enjoyed going to flea markets.

Sam was a U. S. Army veteran and a member of American Legion Post No. 250 and Springmill Fraternal Order of Police No. 172.

Funeral service will be at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, January 22, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Pastor Dwight Dunbar officiating.  Military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.  Following cremation, burial will be at a later date in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Friends may call from noon until the service on Sunday at the funeral home.

    Sam was a part of my childhood memories. I am the middle daughter of Raymond and Alice Stearns, and Sam used to stop by my Grandma Georgia's almost weekly and a lot of the time on Sundays to share a tune with my Aunts and Uncles, the younger cousins and any friends that might happen by. I remember his daughter having a voice as well. Although I have not lived in Indiana for many years, these memories have never left me. Rest In Peace Sam and we'll look for you in another song.
