Dear Cheryl and family: I met Alan at Indiana State University in September of 1964 we were both incoming freshman--we lived on the first floor of Reeve Hall, the first co-ed dorm at ISU. We were both School of Technology majors and shared a number of classes on campus. He was studying to be an Industrial Arts teacher, and I, a Vocational Machine Trades teacher. I was from the Calumet Region in Lake County, he was a kid from Mitchell. We became friends and shared many good moments at ISU. He was a good and decent guy. As Christians, we believe our loved one is now at peace in God's love. Somewhere far beyond the stars, Alan now enjoys Heaven's banquet prepared from the harvest of his life. God bless you, my friend.

Family, sorry for your loss. It has been extra hot here lately and the dog and i have not been out walking. I had no idea he was not well. I always said "hi Mr. Wood" when i seen him on the front porch, or he would always wave at us if he was driving. I'm sure he had no idea who i was but i always remembered him from high school. Never had him as a teacher but was my football coach. He gave you his honest thought on what i was doing right OR wrong. NEVER screamed at me, just would say "just work on it Hatfield", and i would. I can see he was 11 years older than me when i was in school. He amazed me just how STRONG a man he was. STRONG! Prayers for you all. GOD now has a great man in his kingdom now. Amen!

Although I had not seen Alan since the years when he played sports in Mitchell High with my brothers, we had a pleasant conversation on Sunday afternoon. I had provided him a ride home from CVS pharmacy after a car problem. Alan gave me the gift of a sweet story about my father remembered from the days when he visited the farm with my brothers. I feel so sad, but also privileged to have shared a moment of his last hours. My deepest sympathy to Alan's family and friends for your great loss.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. Alan was just one of those special people...he treated everyone the same, and always had a smile and time to talk to you. Many years ago, when I first started subbing, he was a great help to me, always happy to answer questions and encourage. He was so great with kids, fair and old-school, kind and compassionate. He was exactly the kind of person that we need more of, in schools, and all aspects of life. My prayers for all of you ❤

Mr. Wood helped me get through so much in Jr. High and even in high school. Even though he was just the VP but he was my counselor. I’d go talk to him and he’d give me great advice. I’d go to him crying because I was being bullied and going through a lot at home. He’d let me cry in his office for hours, even if I missed class. He was such a great mentor. I’m so deeply sad about his passing. If it wasn’t for him in school, I don’t honestly know how I’d would’ve gotten through it. Many thoughts go to his family and friends and to the Mitchell community as well. ♥

My sincerest condolences to the many family members of one of the nicest, most caring guys I was ever blessed to know. I came to MJHS in the early 80’s as only a third year teacher and Alan became an instant go-to guy for answers to my millions of questions and half-a-million mistakes. He was certainly one of my many Mitchell role models and I am forever in his debt for giving me honest critiques as I made my way in the world of public education.

I am so sorry to hear of Coach Wood’s death. I always had a great amount of respect for how he handled himself. He always pushed to get the most out us but never made it out to be like he was above us. I always felt like he treated us all as equals. He made it clear that we all made mistakes including himself. The lessons were learned by how we grew and moved on from those mistakes and do our best to not repeat them. A good man.
