Evelyn S. Williams, age 66, peacefully passed away on October 21, 2017 in Indianapolis, Indiana, following a six month courageous battle with cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer).
Born while her father was serving in the US Army on May 13, 1951 in Columbia, South Carolina, she was the oldest daughter of the late James Middleton & Beulah Mae (Brewer) Robertson. In 1969, she graduated from Mitchell High School, and received her nursing degree in 1972 from Vincennes University.
Later that year, she married William H.”Bill” Williams on November 25, 1972 in Mitchell, Indiana. They shared almost 45 years together, before his unexpected death last month on September 7, 2017.
Evelyn served as a registered nurse for 45 years. She worked at Putnam County Hospital and was House Supervisor at Dunn Memorial Hospital, before transitioning into home health care. This is where she connected with families on an intimate and personal level. Often, she made friends in these situations and maintained these relationships long after caring for their loved ones. In 2013, she began a new part of her career. With the upcoming births of her grandchildren, she opted to give up her “day job” and started working third shift at Mitchell Manor and at StoneBridge Health Care Center. Her wish was to enjoy her new role as Grandma and relish time with Ike (age 4) and Adeline (age 3.5). This was “ the berries” as Mom called it! She would often say, “it doesn’t get any better than this” — Her passion and proudest accomplishment was her family.
Evelyn was talented in the kitchen. She would prepare large family meals, as well as decorate and cater any event that our family was having. Often, you could see her assisting with one of her sisters’ events or businesses.
Her favorite time of the year was Christmas. She adorned her home with decorations and valued the time together as we gathered in her home; for good food, family and laughs. She was the epitome of goodness, infinite love, and had a huge heart.
She always enjoyed the fellowships at the Elks, Bedford American Legion and the monthly Home Builders meetings and their annual picnics.
Those left behind to mourn her loss are her four children, William H. “Bill” Williams II, and his wife Darla; April M. Williams and her fiance, Jeff Herrmann; Shelley A. Williams, and her fiance, Jeremy Blackwell; James “Dallas” Williams and his wife Baylee; grandchildren, Brodie, Ike and Adeline; three devoted sisters, Nancy R. Lee (David), Brenda Harrison (Keith) and Barbara Grissom (Jerry Kindred). She was a beloved aunt, niece, cousin, in-law and friend. There is no doubt that her most prized and joyful moments were spent with her family.
The family requests in lieu of flowers memorial contributions be made at the funeral home to the IU Health Simon Cancer Center, payable to IU Foundation/Cholangiocarcinoma (Bile Duct Cancer) Research.
Visitation hours will be observed from 3-8:00 PM Tuesday, October 24 at Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 705 W. Warren St., Mitchell, IN 47446. The funeral service will be there at 1:00 PM Wednesday, October 25, 2017. She will be laid to rest in a sunset service at 6:00 PM at The Gardens at Olive Branch Cemetery, Greenwood, Indiana.
Our family would like to express our deepest appreciation for your support and kindness during this most difficult time in our lives.
