MITCHELL – James William “Jim” Hornocker, Jr., 68, passed away Thursday, April 30, 2020, at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born July 22, 1951, in Bedford, he was the son of James William and Deloris (Reichman) Hornocker, Sr.  He married Mary Lou Suddarth May 17, 2011.

Jim served six years as a Mitchell Police Officer and retired from the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department with 35 years of service.  He held the rank of captain for 29 years.  He was a U. S. Army veteran, held the rank of Master Sergeant, and was a member of American Legion Post No. 250.  Jim was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 14 F&AM and La-Or-Ma Shrine Club.   He was a founding member of Spring Mill Fraternal Order of Police and dedicated his life to law enforcement.  Jim was a member of Avoca Baptist Church and a graduate of Bedford High School in 1969.  Jim raised horses, was a horse farrier, and  spent lots of time with his friends at horse camps.  Jim was a fan of NASCAR and the Indianapolis Colts. He enjoyed spending time with his granddaughters, Megan and Miranda, and his dog, Sluggo.

His parents preceded him in death.

Private family service will be Monday, May 4, at Cresthaven Memory Gardens.  Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department Chaplain Jeff Nikirk will officiate.

    Sorry for your loss Mary Lou sending prayers to family and friends. Jim was one of the best officers to ever wear the badge in Mitchell and Lawrence county sheriff's department he had a great sense of humor and wore his badge with respect and honor he will be sadly missed R.I.P Jim!!!!!!!!
