MITCHELL – Margaret Jean “Peggy” Buck, 92, of Mitchell, passed away Monday, March 20, 2023, at her home surrounded by her family.

Born August 8, 1930, in Iroquois County, IL, she was the daughter of Otis A. and Geneva L. (Bender) German. She married Donald A. Buck on October 9, 1949, and he preceded her in death on April 2, 2009.

Her family moved to Tippecanoe County when she was in high school and she graduated from Romney High School. She then attended Purdue University for a year and her loyalty to the Boilermakers lasted her lifetime.

At the age of 78, Peggy retired from the Lawrence County Extension Office as secretary after 45 years. She prided herself on finding an answer or information needed, for every person that came into the office. Being a member of the Lawrence County Cattlemen’s Association was important to her as well as helping with their activities while she worked in the Extension office. She cared deeply for her Extension and 4-H families.

Peggy was a devoted member of the First United Methodist Church of Bedford and enjoyed playing in the Bell Choir. She was a member of the Christian Women’s Club , Altrusa, Lawrence County Community Concert Association, Land of Limestone Master Gardeners, Hoosier Hillsides Master Gardeners and loved attending the Little Theater.

She loved her country, was a proud Republican and had voted in every election since she was 21.

Attending her family’s activities were her hobbies and always a priority, be it a ballgame, dance recital, music performance or showing cattle, pigs or horses.

Peggy and I came to share many common interests when she was a bridesmaid for my sister, Jean Crouse Alt. She was the one who introduced me to a 'merry widow.' What was that, anyway? It was a one piece bra, corset and britches. Over the years, we shared on FaceBook. I knew who Donny Buck was, too. I shared his love of horses. He had gone to Jackson School just like all we Crouse kids did. Peggy was always the picture of grace and was an intent listener.

Peggy was a fine lady with a wonderful smile. I know how much she cared about her family and her community. She not only cared, she actively worked to make a difference. I enjoyed our time together in the Lawrence County Courthouse. My prayers for the family. May your faith, family and many friends help you through the sorrow.

Peggy was a wonderful, hardworking Christian woman. My family knew Peggy from church and my younger daughter had Peggy for sewing in 4-H. We will miss seeing Peggy in church, her sweet smile and her asking Bob or me about the kids.

What a wonderful woman Peggy is (as a Christian, she's more alive now than she's ever been!). When if run into when I still lived in Bedford, I'd tell her that she was one of the prettiest women I knew! She was very kind and compassionate. How precious for all of you to have such a steady, loving person in your lives. I knew Peggy, Don, Lisa and Donnie as a child and hold happy memories of all of you. My deepest sympathy for your earthly loss!

I am so sorry to hear of Peggy's passing, but I know she is walking on streets of gold, where the roses never fade. I always enjoyed being with her, whether at Master Gardener events or in church. I was never her pastor, but I know how faithful she was to her church, and appreciate the support she gave me through her prayers. She will be missed by all who knew her.
