PAOLI – Mary “Ruth” (Malpass) Fitzgibbon, 86, passed away Friday, April 3, 2020, at Indiana University Health Paoli Hospital.

Born September 8, 1933, in Burgaw, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Edgar R. and Mabel (Peterson) Malpass. She married Robert Young, Sr. with whom she had four children and one stepson. She later married Edwin G. Fitzgibbon and he preceded her in death August 1997.

She attended schools in Pender County, North Carolina, and graduated from Warwick High School, Newport News, Virginia in 1952. She received her LPN degree at Leigh Memorial School of Practical Nursing.

Ruth’s favorite past times included reading, community involvement, and being a member of Springs Valley United Methodist Church. Ruth was also a member of the United Methodist Women, the West Baden Research Club, West Baden Historical Society, and Women Fellowship of Church Women.

Ruth was a spitfire, loved being around people, and had a kind and charitable heart.

She is survived by her children, Ted (Chris) Young of Greensboro, Philadelphia

Robert Young, Jr. of Norfolk, Virginia
David Young of Knotts Island, North Carolina
Katherine (Tim) Qualkenbush of Paoli

Ruth was also preceded in death by her eight siblings, Bessie L. Rivenbark of North Carolina, Marion Malpass of North Carolina, Edith Thigpin of Virginia, Francis Rowe of North Carolina, Rosa Mae Hewitt of North Carolina, Mabel Moore of North Carolina, E. R. Malpass of Virginia, and Robert Malpass of Virginia.

Cremation was chosen with a graveside service later this summer at her family cemetery in her home state of North Carolina.
