MITCHELL — Richard Delano Turner, 77, Harlingen, TX, formerly of the Bedford-Mitchell, IN area, died on August 29th.
He was born Sept. 12, 1935 in Lawrence County, IN, the son of Robert R. and Radie Kathleen (Turner) Finley. He married Jo Ann (Bell) Turner Sept. 8, 1956 in Taunton, MA.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps, four years active and four years inactive, and after moving to Mitchell, IN he owned and operated Turner Transportation, Inc. and drove trucks for Carpenter Body Works. Richard was a former member of the Mitchell Police Department. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 250 since 1966 and the Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 F. & A.M. since 1976. After retiring as a Lawrence Co. Weights and Measurers Inspector he and his wife moved to Harlingen, TX.
He is survived by his wife; two sisters, Naomi Norman, Bedford, and Anah Mae Briscoe, Mitchell; a brother Robert Turner, Monticello, KY; two grandsons, J.D. (Crystal) Powell Jr. and Darin (Allie) Powell, both of Bedford; two great-granddaughters, Ava Caroline Powell and Adrianna Sue Powell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and stepfather George Finley, Bloomington; a daughter, Debra Sue Powell, and a son Richard D. Turner Jr., both of Mitchell; one brother, Robert Turner, Bedford; one sister, Dorothy(Turner) Norman.
A memorial service will be at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, October 3, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Bro. Jack Taylor officiating. Military honors accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.
Burial will be in Liberty Baptist Cemetery at a later date.
