MITCHELL – Ronald Warren “Sugarbear” Watterson, 78, passed away Friday, October 20, 2023, at Indiana University Health Bloomington Hospital.

Born July 4, 1945, in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, he was the son of Robert Orval and Anna Grace (Curry) Watterson.  Ronnie married Deloris Ann Hart on November 1, 1968 and they were married for almost 55 years.

Ronnie retired from Hall Bros. Transportation as an owner/operator where he worked from 1979-2009 and drove over four million miles.  He was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of the American Legion Post No. 250.  Ronnie was an Elder at Mitchell First Christian Church.  He loved to fish, play his trumpet, and do woodworking.  Ronnie never met a stranger and always had a smile to share.  He loved to tell stories and sometimes tall tales.  Ronnie was a great mechanic, and his granddaughter Chloe once said, “There was nothing Grampy couldn’t fix.”

Surviving are his wife, Deloris Ann Watterson of Mitchell; daughter, Lori Ann Watterson Fiscus of Mitchell; and granddaughter, Chloe Lynn Fiscus.

His parents and daughter, Terri Lynn Watterson, preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 24, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Pastor Brian Bolton and Pastor Kirk Williams officiating.  Burial will be at Mitchell Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.

I am just getting around to this. I am so sorry Ronnie has passed. I went to high school with him and he always had a joke and a smile. The last time I spoke with him he and herb were trying to pull a joke on me. I am sure they are doing that somewhere today.

For for you all. I knew him from the Beasley days and I was in shipping at FoMoCo and the other names they gave themselves!. 8 years of stories and him eating lots of food at all hours in the office! God Bless all.

My heart goes out to all of you. Ronnie and Delores were always two of my favorite customers for many years. No matter how hard the day at work. I would always have a smile after talking to either one of them.

Our family sends our most heartfelt condolences to Delores, Lori, and Chloe. We were saddened to see that our friend and coworker has gone on to his reward. May it comfort you all to know that he is with Jesus and has been reunited with Terri and his parents. Mark asked me to share that he and "Sugarbear" traveled many miles together while at Hall Bros. He and Ronnie were forever friends. Working in the office at Hall's, I also got to talk to Ronnie for things like load information, payroll, etc. He always was courteous and respectful, but "us girls" (he called us "you girls") also enjoyed a story or two. Ronnie also built Mark and I a swing that we have now passed down to Josh. May the Lord comfort you all and give you strength during this difficult time. We are sending up prayers for you all. 🙏

Delores and Family, I am so sorry to hear of Ronnie’s passing. I know it’s been such a long time since we’ve seen you all, but wonderful memories back in the day at FBC. What a great man and Mom (Nicki) would be sad in knowing of his passing. I know he is celebrating and rejoicing with his Savior and seeing Terri again.! Thoughts and prayers!

I'm so sorry to hear of Ronnie's passing. I have many fond memories of him. I.e. my family and Ronnie's were at Bogg's Creek MANY years ago. Ronnie caught a fish. My brother was mad he hadn't caught anything. Ronnie took his fish and secretively put it in my brother's line. My brother was so happy to have finally "caught" a fish. He was also so happy that his fish was bigger than Ronnie's fish. I remember Ronnie laughing so hard... I can hear him laughing now.

Terry & I loved Ronnie, in his last years we unfortunately didn't see him much. But we loved him always. Terry & Ronnie were Buddies. I pray they see each other in Heaven.
