BEDFORD – Lorna Joyce Mundy, 85, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2023, at her residence.

She was born March 3, 1937 in Martin County, Indiana to Raymond and Christine (Burton) Mundy.  Her parents were both descendants of early 1800’s Indiana settlers.  Joyce was a member of Mitchell First Baptist Church and Huron Baptist Church.  She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Huron WTK Club, and the Mitchell Fleur De Lis.

Joyce graduated from Huron High School in 1955, attended Indiana University, and graduated from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in 1959.  As an obstetrical nurse, she worked at Dunn Hospital for 10 ½ years before helping open the obstetrical unit at the new Bedford Medical Center in 1970, retiring in 1999 to care for aged parents.  She was a registered nurse until 2022 and had been a member of the American Nurses Association for 62 years.

As L. Joyce Mundy, she wrote Souvenirs, for three different newspapers; Mitchell Tribune, Mitchell Time, and Bedford Times Mail, and published seven books of her collections.

She enjoyed painting, drawing and usually had a group to paint and socialize.  She loved music and attended frequent jams to hear local musicians.  She learned to whistle as a child from her grandparents and would often whistle along with the tunes.

She is survived by sister, Eleanor Mundy and three brothers, Gordon (Dolores) Mundy, Gary (Joelle) Mundy, and Marty (Becky) Mundy.  Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Sailor Schofield, Troy Mundy, Stan Mundy, Kent Mundy, Owen (Joelle) Mundy, Reed (Sarabeth) Mundy, Sara Christine Mundy, Justin Mundy, and Nathan (Amanda) Mundy, along with several great nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Her parents and brothers, Graydon Mundy and Stanley Howard Mundy preceded her in death.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 4, at the Huron Baptist Church with Reverend Reggie Clark officiating.  Burial will be in Clark Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Friday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center and from 10:00 a.m. until the service on Saturday at the Huron Baptist Church.

My mom loved her books and bought copies of all seven books to give to friends. I still have the copies she gave me and my mothers set as well. My mom, Matt Joyce some years ago and I was there and it was really a nice time because they had corresponded over the years after my parents had moved to Arizona and California back in the late 90s.

Joyce was one of the kindest people I know. She was with me in the ambulance when I went to IU Hospital - Indianapolis - in premature labor at 1:00 am. I knew I was OK with her by my side. She brought amazing comfort to all the patients and friends that have been blessed to have known her. Love you Joyce. Grace Schneider

I met Joyce at a drawing class in Bedford and then later at the Baptist Church. She visited our home and wrote an article about Kathryn Parks for the paper. She was a delightful person and loved to talk about many things. My condolences to Gary and her family.

Joyce gave us all the gift of her written memories which painted so vividly other times and characters from her past. Listening to Joyce tell stories was like having a favorite Auntie relay all the family news and the way she spoke, you could sense these ancestors and their antics were still alive to her. Her delight in my bringing ice cream or cranberry relish to our clubs' pitch-ins always made me feel especially appreciated. Love and miss you, Joyce but I know you've gone to your Eternal home.

Joyce was an absolute treasure. I first met Joyce when she offered for me to publish Souvenirs in the Mitchell Times about 20 years ago. We conversed often during my days at the newspaper, and I truly treasured her stories of Huron and the Hollar in Martin County. In fact, I’m pretty sure a majority of the history I know of Huron came via Joyce. I have many, if not all of her books, and I’m thankful I have those to help me in treasuring her memory. Thank you, Joyce, for sharing your love of storytelling with the rest of us. Rest in peace, and prayers of comfort to her family.
