Stephen Escoe “Steve” Isom II, 78, passed away peacefully Monday, April 22, 2024, surrounded by his family, in his home on the family farm West of Mitchell.
Steve was born in Bedford, IN on March 13, 1946 to Stephen Escoe “Pete” and Gladys (Stevens) Isom. He graduated from Mitchell High School with the Class of 1964 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business from Indiana University in 1972. Prior to attending IU, Steve was employed at Carpenter Body Works. Upon graduation from IU, Steve was hired by General Motors Corporation as a supervisor at their Danville, IL plant.
Steve married Candace Harrison on June 8, 1968 and they would have celebrated 56 years of marriage this year. Steve and Candy returned to Mitchell in 1976 and Steve worked for Gould Battery Corporation in Salem. In 1980, Steve accepted an hourly position at Lehigh Portland Cement Company’s Mitchell plant which enabled him to help his father more on the family’s farm. The Isom Farm was established in 1825 and was designated a Hoosier Homestead in 1977. Steve loved the farm, working the land, raising cattle, and felt a personal responsibility to be a good steward of God’s earth. He retired from Lehigh in 2013 and continued working on the farm alongside his sons.
Steve was a 50 year member of Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 F.&A.M. and past member of the Scottish Rite Cathedral and La-Or-Ma Shrine Club. He was also a member of The Lawrence County Cattlemen’s Association and Jacob Finger Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Candace; sons, Stephen Escoe “Pete” Isom III (Ashley Allen) and John-Paul Harrison (Julie) Isom, both of Mitchell; grandchildren, Rieken Isom, Stephen Jack Escoe Isom, Quinley Isom, Reese Isom, Julia Isom, Max Whitledge, and Wesley Harrell; sister, Linda (Alan) Terrell of Rochester, IN; sister-in-law, Drucinda Burton; brothers-in-law, William Harrison III and Tom Hoagland; and several nieces and nephews.
His parents and a sister, Mary Lou Hoagland, preceded him in death.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2024 at Jacob Finger Methodist Church with Pastor Pam Tedrow and Brother Marc Fields officiating.
