Shirley Marie Alexander, 89, passed peacefully in her sleep on September 9, 2025.

Born August 10, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter of Leonard and Molly (Walter) Mohr.  She graduated from Thornton Fractional High School, Calumet City, IL in 1954.  She married Oscar S. Smith in 1955 who passed away in 1960.  Shirley married James E. Alexander in August 1963.

Shirley was an active member of Bonds Chapel in West Baden, Indiana, where she had many close friends and reaffirmed her faith in 2002. She participated in meal preparation for various events, VBS, other teen activities and church celebrations.  She loved roller skating, bowling and camping most of her life.  She loved her family and spent time with them as much as possible.  Her kindness and love showed through in everything she did. She loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  Shirley had a smile and a laugh that put others at ease.  She will be missed by all.

She is survived by her husband, James Alexander; children, Roxanne (Ric) Robinson of Zephyrhills, Florida; Phillip (Eva) Smith of Leesburg, Florida; Scott (Trish) Alexander of Demotte; James R. (Lori) Alexander of Valparaiso; S. Lynn (Mike Jones) May of Washington; G. Randy (Lori) Alexander of Michigan City; Jenny Ruston of Washington; David (Pam) Alexander of Terre Haute; Carolyn (Wayne) Bethel of Owensboro, Kentucky; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Evelyn Atwood of Lowell; and several nieces and nephews.

Her parents and husband, Oscar S. Smith, preceded her in death.

Celebration of Life service will be held noon, September 27, at Bonds Chapel in West Baden.  Cremation was chosen in keeping with Shirley’s wishes and burial will follow the service in Bonds Chapel Cemetery. 

The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the service at noon at Bonds Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Bonds Cemetery Association at Bonds Chapel, 8625 CR 810 N., West Baden Springs, IN 47469 OR to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Shirley’s honor.

    Sending love, hugs and prayers for your family. My Aunt Shirley will be missed. Loved your smile and your laugh . I remember when we were together making tomato jelly… We laughed all day That’s what I’m going to miss , our time talking, you were my 2 nd mom , the only one that knew how to help me with my mom, thank you, aunt Shirley you were truly a godmother, I love you

    I loved the way she said “Wow” when I was a kid. She had a bit of an Chicago accent that I thought was cool. Many memories but that stands out to me. I will miss her dearly. Much love.
