MITCHELL Virginia Whalen Gobin, 89, Mitchell, passed away at 1:15 a.m. Tuesday, May 24, 2011, at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford.

Born April 17, 1922, in Monroe County, she was the daughter of Elmer and Icey Louise (Walls) Stewart. She married Fred Whalen on January 2, 1937. Her second marriage was to Carl M. Gobin April 17, 1976; both husbands preceded her in death.

She retired from Modern Cleaners in Bloomington, and worked at Reliance Manufacturing. Virginia was a member of the Mitchell Wesleyan Church and attended the Mitchell Church of The Nazarene. Virginia was a member of Mary’s Sit Down and Shape Up Exercise Class.

She is survived by: children,
Nancy (Donald) Mahan, Bedford
David (Louise) Whalen, Bedford
Roberta Henderson, Mitchell
Jean Elrod Springfield, Ohio
brothers,
Bill (Rose) Stewart, Ellettsville
Paul Stewart, Waldorf, Maryland
14 grandchildren
30 great grandchildren
18 great great grandchildren

Virginia raised several step children including a very special one, Sondra Williams. She is also survived by several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Her parents; daughter, Tina Marie Crabb; granddaughter, Christina Gibbons; brother, Warren Stewart; and sisters, Naomi Bush, Margaret Bush, and Mary Ellen Jones preceded her in death.

Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, May 26, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Jones officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday and from 11:00 a.m. until the service on Thursday at the funeral home.

    Roberta and family, I hated to hear about your mom's death. She was such an inspiration to me when going to Mitchell Wesleyan. She would always encourage me and thank me for playing the piano. I always looked forward in seeing her when I would visit. My prayers are with you all.
