MITCHELL – Alma Jean Lindley, 84, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 22, 2026, at her residence.

Born March 5, 1942, in Paoli, she was the daughter of Harrison and Clara Opal (Walls) Knight.

Alma was a 1960 graduate of Paoli High School. She retired from the City of Mitchell where she worked in the water department and drove the city bus. She had also been a bus driver for Mitchell Community Schools. Alma attended Mitchell Church of the Nazarene and Hillcrest Christian Church. She loved going to Silver Sneakers at the Mitchell Fitness Club. She could be seen walking all over Mitchell with her sisters, admiring everyone’s flowers. Alma had a joyful and youthful personality with her boundless, positive energy. Her joyous zeal for life was contagious to anyone who met her and she was everyone’s biggest cheerleader. She never grew “old” as she dressed hip, had stylish haircuts, and knew every current celebrity and element of pop culture. Alma loved all of her family and loved being “Nanny” to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Heaven gained “Alma Jean the Queen of Valeene.”

Survivors include her daughters; Shawn King of Mitchell, Lori (Mike) Smith of Lawrenceport, and Jamie (Sean) Steele of Heltonville; grandchildren, Jessica L. (David Weaver) King, Chelsey (Jerod) Jennings, Levi (Morgan) Smith, Lindley Steele, and Ruel Steele; great grandchildren, Madyson Weaver, Olivia Weaver, Halle Harris, Maritt Jennings, Henley Smith, and Elouise Jennings; sisters, Eleanor Taylor and Margaret Spaulding; and her beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Her parents and sister, Jo Clouse, preceded her in death.

A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, April 26, at Mitchell Cemetery. The family invites you to come as you are and share the boundless love Alma taught us all.

ET and Margaret, My prayers are with your family at this time. I really thought Alma was such a nice person. I enjoyed being around her at exercise class very much. Sorry I missed the service but I was thinking about you all. As I have said at many funerals, Alma is now with that glorious Communion of Saints. Blessings, Charlie Carpenter (Rocky)

I got to know and love her through her daily visits to Mitchell Fitness Center with her sisters, granddaughter Chelsey, and through the Silver Sneakers Class. She was a bundle of joy and spread laughter with anyone she came in contact with. If you encountered her you left feeling loved. May we all keep loving life and laughing with friends and family in her honor.
