MITCHELL – Barbara Ann Oswalt, 77, passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2020, at her residence.

Born October 29, 1942, in Leesville, Louisiana, she was the daughter of Lt. Col. James Hubert and Helen Musette (Boyett) Tirey.  She married James T. Oswalt, Jr. March 21, 1998.

Barbara was a teacher and school administrator.    She earned her bachelor’s degree at Ball State University and her master’s and specialist degrees at Indiana University Bloomington.  She had taught at Lincoln Elementary, Fayetteville Elementary and elementary school in Hawaii.    Barbara had served as assistant director of the Special Education Cooperative and as director of Special Education Cooperative from 1982 – 2004.  She was an organizer and active in Special Olympics, and enjoyed Special Ed children, especially.

Barbara was a Lawrence County Women of Excellence recipient and committee member, and was active in community service.  She was also a member of Gamma Chapter of Tri Kappa in Bedford, Bedford Regional Medical Center Auxiliary, and First United Methodist Church in Bedford. She was very creative and enjoyed flower arranging, painting, and crafting.
