BLOOMINGTON – Barbara Jean (Stapleton) Summers, age 82, passed away peacefully on March 20th, 2020, due to Alzheimer’s at Aperion Care in Spencer, Indiana.
She was born July 11th, 1937, in French Lick, Indiana, to Clarence Lloyd and Catherine (Crowley) Stapleton. She married her former husband, George Everett Summers in 1958 and had two children, Victoria Ann (1960) and Jeffery Lee (1963).
Barbara was happiest in life when she was surrounded by her family, friends, cats, and dog. She loved to visit Tennessee and the Smokey Mountains. She was a devoted member of Woodville Baptist Church where she enjoyed bible study and other church related activities. She also loved spending time with her best friend, Debbie Beck.
Barbara was an incredibly hard worker and truly enjoyed her career which began in 1951-1954 in which she worked as a switchboard operator for the French Lick (Sheraton) Hotel. From 1955-1958 she worked at Indiana Bell Telephone Company in Bloomington, Indiana. Including other places of employment as a secretary for the Fourwinds Resort and finally at the Indiana University School of Medicine as an organ transplant secretary in which she retired from in 2003.
Barbara’s life was lived by one of her favorite bible verses from Philippians 4:13 – “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
Barbara is survived by her daughter, Vicky Riddle and husband Jay Riddle, son Jeff Summers and wife Angie Summers. Grandson Kevin Gravitt. Granddaughters Jennifer Fields and husband Brock Fields, Joni Haworth and husband Steven Haworth. Great grandsons Jackson Haworth and Daniel Haworth.
Funeral service was at 1:00 p.m. Monday, March 23, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center. Burial was in Ames Chapel Cemetery.
