MITCHELL – Betty Joan Speck, 90, passed away Monday, November 10, 2025, at Stonebridge Health Campus.

Born November 17, 1934, in Mitchell, she was the daughter of Robert and Edna (Clouse) Wood.  Betty married Creed Speck on July 3, 1963 and he preceded her in death September 24, 1988.  They were married for 25 years.

Betty was the youngest child in the family, with six brothers and one sister.  When she was young she would pick strawberries for a nickel a quart and at the age of 14, she earned 35¢ an hour at Opal Quigley’s grocery store.  Betty worked at Trav-lers TV and radio factory for nine years and worked in the Hatfield Elementary School cafeteria for 28 years.  She was of the Protestant faith and attended Mitchell Church of the Nazarene.

Betty loved crocheting, crafting, and working with flowers.  She also loved hummingbirds, and collecting glassware and “what-nots.”  Betty loved her family very much.

Surviving are her children, Mark Jones of Mitchell and Paxton (Melissa) Speck of Floyds Knobs; grandchildren, Brandi Gladson, Chris Speck, Cassandra Tilley, Brandon Jones, Jessica Carr, and Grayson Speck; several great-grandchildren; several special nieces and nephews; daughter-in-law, Janet Speck of Carmel; son-in-law, Tom Brown of Richmond; and former daughter-in law, Debbie Knoll of Indianapolis.

Her parents; husband; children, Jackie Speck and Lynnette Brown; and siblings, Kenneth (Wanda) Wood, Harold (Lela) Wood, Chester (Rosanell) Wood, Bob (Maxine) Wood, Jr., Lowell (Betty) Wood, Glen (Mary Wanda) Wood, and Mildred (Joe) Baker, preceded her in death.

Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 14, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Pastor Byron Buker officiating.  Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.

Betty was a real sweetie. She used to make Chip and I Christmas ornaments, and visit with us in the cafeteria. I remember seeing her at the festival and talking with her each year. She will be missed!

I always loved talking with Betty when she came in to pay her insurance and in recent years when she called in. Just last week her and I shared a wonderful conversation in person. Such a sweet person, she will be missed.

Betty was so easy to talk to and she always had a friendly wave as we would drive by her house. We always looked for her, either on the porch or in the garden. She loved being outdoors. Paxton and family, we love you and may God surround you with love and happy memories.

Girl's I'm so so sorry! I hadn't heard about your mother either. Brandi and I had so much fun as Young ladies running an being creative in every way we could. And we would always have Betty and Lynette to back us up. And let me tell you about that. Marvelous delicious cherry cheesecake delight best I've ever had to date. Lots of marvelous memories to be remembered.

May the Lord comfort you with precious memories of your mother and friend. May His promise of a future day of sweet reunion with no pain and no more tears soothe you. Always sweet to me, she was, very kind. She had nothing but joy in her voice when she spoke with me about her children and grandchildren.
