MITCHELL – Brian Scott Gerkin, 64, passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2024 at his residence.

Born October 17, 1959, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Lloyd and Jessie Colleen (Carroll) Gerkin. He married Peggy Anne Fox on April 20, 1979, and she survives.

Brian retired in 2008 from General Motors as a millwright welder and then started his own welding company, Beyond Welding, in 2009. He was a 1978 graduate of Mitchell High School and a member of UAW Local 440. Brian enjoyed construction and helped everyone build a house. He loved being around his family and fishing.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Gerkin of Mitchell; children, Jacob Scott (Audra) Gerkin of Mitchell, Elizabeth (Bryce) Stephens of Mitchell, and Alexandria “Allie” Gerkin of Mitchell; grandchildren, Madison Gerkin, Ethan Gerkin, Ella Gerkin, Henry Stephens, and Lewis Stephens; and siblings, Julie (Steve) Drake of Lebanon and Steve Gerkin of Mitchell.

His parents and sister, Donna Carol Kendall, preceded him in death.

Funeral Service will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 29, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Keith Mundy officiating. Burial will follow at Mitchell Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the funeral home.

    You do not know me but I felt I needed to tell you how sorry I am that you have lost your loved one. Even though 4 generations ago the Gerkin family moved to different places around southern Indiana, the never stayed in contact. But my father assured me that All of the Gerkin's around are related. I wish I could have the resources to tell you the details of your heavenly departeds But thar information was list last year when i lost my last Gerkin family member, my dad/ best friend Thomas Gerkin. . But I just needed to tell you'and your family how very very sorry I am that you lost your loved one. I wish I could remember the details of our family history so I could share them with you. But I do know liss and my heart hearts for you and your family.

    I did not know Bryon very well. However i know his Brother Steve, and his Nephew Dan Gerkin. If Bryon was anything like those guys, and i belive he was. Then he was a awesome Dude!! The Gerkin name caries clout, it means something around these parts. I had the opportunity to witnes Dan and Steve drop what they were doing, and rebuild a pontoon boat, and trailer. So dan could take him fishing before he past. They went hog wild and practically built a new boat. It would have taken less time to do this but it was Bryon who wanted to weld up a new trailer. He wouldnt let it go. Thats the kind of guy he was. He wanted things to be the best they could be. And thats the way Dan and Steve are as well. The attention to detail Bryon had will live on through his fine family. Rest in peace Bryon.
