ORLEANS George A. Pruett, 87, Orleans, formerly of Mitchell, passed away at 7:09 p.m. Tuesday, March 24, 2009, at Mitchell Manor Living and Rehabilitation Center.

Born September 29, 1921, in Orange County, he was the son of George Elmer and Martha (Owens) Pruett. He married Betty J. Strange April 16, 1946, and she preceded him in death May 27, 1997.

He retired from Mitchell Transport and was a member of the Sun City Christian Center in Florida.

George was a U. S. Army veteran of World War II and the recipient of the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with four Bronze Stars and the Philippines Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star. He was a member of the Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250 and Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

His parents; wife; brother, Lloyd Pruett; and sisters, Mae Johnson, Lois Powell and twin sister, Clois who died at birth, Lenora Brown, Olive Wells, and Mayme Keen, preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 29, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Scott officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery with military honors accorded by Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250 and Marvin R. Davis Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Friends may call from 3:00 -7:00 p.m. on Saturday and from noon until the service on Sunday at the funeral home.
