To all the family, my thoughts and prayers are with you. Sue, I remember your dear mother Glenda visiting Burris during a school event. I thank you for introducing me to her. I liked to remind Mr. Gentry that he had two Glenda's keeping an eye on him. Thanks, Mr. Gentry, for all your years at Mitchell Schools! Thanks for taking a chance by hiring this Paoli girl for the new Title I position that was only supposed to be for one year, and actually lasted 10 years. You first got me involved in READ Council as an officer and a member, which I continued for 30 years. Your leadership at Mitchell has influenced many students, educators and other leaders.

The word that always came to mind was KIND. Mr. Gentry was my elementary principal. He was the “nice one”. He lives not far from my family, and even drove me home once when family was not available to get me. I never ever heard a negative word about this man from anyone. What a gentle soul. What a beautiful person! My condolences to all of your family. Celebrate him and all of the beautiful memories that he brings.

Mr. Gentry recommended me to be hired at Hatfield Elementary School in 1976. It was a wonderful opportunity to work with a kind and compassionate administrator, an excellent staff, and new and innovative facilities. Mr. Gentry and Sue hosted many Burris Hatfield parties at their home, and he was always willing to let the teachers at Hatfield try new concepts and ideas to make learning fun and rewarding for our students. He was our Christopher Columbus, opened the Hatfield Olympic Games, helped construct an Indian village in the library, played basketball with the boys and girls on the playground, read to the kids, and otherwise made a great little school “Happy Hatfield”. He will be missed and remembered fondly by all the original Hatfield Gang.
