MITCHELL – Gerald Lynn Ross, 58, passed away Saturday, June 7, 2025.

Born September 8, 1966, in Louisville, Kentucky, he was the son of Walter Ross and Patricia (Mercer) Ross.  He married DeAnna Keefer on April 21, 2013 and she survives.

Gerald was a proud U.S. Navy veteran.  He served two tours of duty; first on the USS Shenandoah and then on the USS Barnstable County.  His numerous commendations and awards include:  three Battle “E” Awards, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Award, two Southwest Asia Service Medals with Bronze Star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and five Sea Service Deployment Ribbons.  He was proud to be a “Shellback.”

Gerald was a member of the UAW Local 440 and worked at General Motors as a tool and die maker and he was a member of the UAW Veteran’s Committee.  Gerald enjoyed riding his motorcycle and mowing his yard.  He was quite the comedian and always had something funny to say, but he was always willing to help anyone, even a stranger.  Gerald was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.  He lived a life devoted to his family.

Surviving are his wife, DeAnna Ross of Mitchell; children, Allison Ross Griffin of North Versailles, Pennsylvania, John (Lindsay) Ross of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, and Marlaina (Jonathan) Morris of Elizabethtown, Kentucky; grandchildren, Lucas Ross, Angela Griffin, Aubrey Ross, and Mason Ross; and sister, Donna (Edward) Sanchez of Puerto Rico.

His parents preceded him in death.

What I will remember the most is his entertaining stories. On any topic or conversation Gerry had a entertaining story either from his life or his childhood. A lot of times his stories had a teaching moment about life in them. They were often so funny you wondered why he didn’t go on the road and make a living just telling stories. He was also willing to help anyone or was a good person to get good straight forward advice from. He will be remembered and missed as one we lost too soon.

I was Jerry’s high school counselor. He was as funny as can be and had a constant naughty twinkle in his eyes. He was beloved. I am so proud of his accomplishments. My condolences.
