MITCHELL Dr. Gordon Thomas Hardman, 73, Mitchell, passed away at 10:10 p.m. Friday, January 29, 2009, at Dunn Memorial Hospital in Bedford.

Born October 29, 1936, in Mitchell, he was the son of Leo Thomas and Mary Louise (Wells) Hardman. He married Jeannette Lee Terrell March 26, 1956.

Tom graduated from Mitchell High School in 1954 and received his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees from Indiana State University. He was a teacher at Charlestown one year and at Burris School until becoming the principal. He served in that capacity 30+ years. His memberships included the Indiana Principals Leadership Academy and Indiana State Teachers Association. Following retirement, he was employed at JayC Food Store.

He coached football, Biddy Basketball, Little League, and coordinated the Punt-Pass- and Kick competition for Ford Motor Company. He was a past master of the Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 F&AM, former member of the Mitchell Rotary Club and Mitchell City Council. He was a member of the Jacob Finger United Methodist Church and had served as Sunday School Superintendent.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 2, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home with Bro. Darrin Chastain and Bro. Morris Chastain officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.

Friends may call from 3:00-8:00 p.m. Monday and from 10:00 a.m. until the service on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 F&AM will conduct a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
