JASPER Harold E. Hargesheimer, 78, Jasper, formerly of Mitchell, passed away at 11:03 p.m. Thursday, February 3, 2011, at Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center in Jasper.

Born January 23, 1933, in Mitchell, he was the son of Marion L. and Ruth (Kirk) Hargesheimer. He married Lois Deane Jeffers, December 30, 2009.

He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1951 and was an avid IU Basketball fan. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, and Jasper Rifle and Gun Club. He showed beagle dogs throughout the Tri-State area and was a member of the Jasper Christian Church. He retired from Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane, and was an explosive worker.

Harold was a U. S. Navy veteran and was Master Gunner on the USS Boston, USS Enterprise, USS Lexington, USS Saratoga, and USS Jonas Ingram. He served three tours of duty in Vietnam. He retired from the Navy with 20 years of service and held the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He was a member of Mitchell American Legion Post No. 250 and Jasper Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9627.

His parents; brother, Jack L. Hargesheimer and sister, Shelby J. Hargesheimer, preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 7, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home with Pastor Darrell Land officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery with military honors accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.
