MITCHELL Hazel Magdalene (Sparks) Deirth, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, felt the arms of Jesus wrap around her as He welcomed her to heaven on October 4, 2010, at 8:15 in the evening.

The daughter of James and Minnie (Leslie) Sparks, Hazel was born January 5, 1936 in Bandy, West Virginia. When she was five years old, Hazel and her family moved to Deirth Holler in Lee County, Virginia. It was there she met and later married her childhood sweetheart, (Harvey) Ray Deirth, who preceded her in death.

Steeped in the traditions of a proud Appalachian heritage, Hazel dedicated her life to the care of her family. She created a home filled with love, moral teachings, and strong family values. From the smell of a home-cooked supper warming on the stove to the beauty in her hand-stitched quilts to the sweet smiles on her face as she watched her family take root and grow . . . all of those who entered her home left knowing they had witnessed something special.
