BEDFORD – James Roy Box, 88, passed away Monday, August 5, 2024, at Cedar Creek Assisted Living of Bedford.

Born April 30, 1936, in Mitchell, he was the son of Harold Edward and Goldia (Beasley) Box.  He married Roberta Evelyn Bundy on June 8, 1957 and she survives.

Roy was a 1954 graduate of Mitchell High School.  He worked as a machinist and mold maker and retired from Crane–NSWC.  Roy had a very mechanical mind and liked working with his hands and farming.  He built a wood splitter and loved splitting wood with family, friends, neighbors, and his church family.  Roy was a member of the Fayetteville Baptist Church.  He enjoyed traveling and going on mission trips. 

Surviving are his wife, Roberta Evelyn Box of Bedford; children, Rhonda Elaine (Richard) Brock of Williams, Regina Eve (Brian) Brock of Williams, and Rita Ellen (Kevin) Daugherty of Bedford; grandchildren, Matthew Allen Brock, Jeremy Paul Brock, Rachel Elaine Bush, Robin Emily Guthrie, Ruthann Elizabeth Denney, and Kaytlin Alexis Daugherty; great-grandchildren, Emily, Kaylee, Javan, Bailey, Sophie, Grayson, Nolan, Olivia, Charlotte, Joshua, and Elaina; and siblings, Joyce Ann Winegar of Michigan and Donald Lee (Mary Beth) Box of Mitchell.

His parents and granddaughter, Jessica Layne Daugherty, preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 7, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Pastor Kenny Walden officiating.  Burial will be at Lawrenceport Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

    I always enjoyed seeing Roberta and Roy walking down the road in the summer with a bucket full of vegetables they shared with the neighbors. Always urged me to take more. Very nice neighbor

    I remember Roy well although it’s been many years since we last met. My mother, Ann Watterson, was a close friend of Roy’s mother Goldie Box and we visited them many times back in the 1950’s and 60’s. When I was in high school I put up hay for Roy’s dad, Herald Box. I remember Roy as being a very nice young man. May God rest his soul.

    Roy shared his wood splitting video when I first started working for Cedar Creek. I loved to see his eyes shine when he talked about it. I also loved taking him and Roberta on country rides past their old homestead place and listening to them reminisce about raising their family. RIP Roy you will be missed.
