MITCHELL – James Wendell Gaddis, 67, passed away Monday, July 6, 2026, at Indiana University Health Bedford Hospital.

Born July 5, 1959, in Bedford, he was the son of James Calvin and Mary Etta (Gaines) Gaddis.

James was a 1977 graduate of Mitchell High School and received his Associates degree from Ivy Tech.  He retired as a purchaser from Cook Medical after 23 years.  He loved the Chicago Cubs and the Purdue Boilermakers, and enjoyed cruising around in his car.  James was supportive to all his grandkids and loved being with them.

Surviving are his daughter, Arika (Kyle Pursell) Gaddis of Mitchell; grandchildren, Harrison Fowler, Eloise Pursell, and Theodore Pursell; and siblings, Joyce Eva Agan of Mitchell, Gene (Betty) Gaddis of Mitchell, and Rebecca Gaddis of Mitchell.

His parents; siblings, Ruth Ann Beasley, Connie Keene, and Mary Smith; and nephew, James Michael Gaddis, preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday, July 13, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center.  Burial will be at Mitchell Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the service on Monday at the funeral home.

    I remember growing up with Jimmy. We all played together and went to school together. As we all grew up, we never forgit each other. He was a very sweet and polite his whole life. Rest in peace my friend. I will miss you.

    To his family, my condolences. We met at Emerson school in first grade and played many a game on the basketball court there. We spoke over the phone about a year ago and had a wonderful conversation, mostly about how great Purdue basketball is. He shared his testimony of receiving salvation and you could tell he was proud of that and how Gene was spreading the word of God. It would have been nice to have seen him as our 50-year class reunion would be next year. From the pictures, you can tell he loved his family. RIP Jimmy, we'll meet again one day.

    Carl, (Jimmy) I love you so much man, I just can't get over this horrific ordeal. You and I have been through so much together, through good times and bad, we have always had a great time. You are a true brother to me. I have so many memories of the things we have done, I believe we have done it all too. You mean so much to me, and I know we had ( have) a true love for one another. I just can't believe that this day has come. We were always together, and whenever people saw one of us, they knew the other one wasn't far behind. Thick as thieves as they say. Pool games, bands, cruising, bonfires, lawn chairs, pick up trucks, beer. singing, listening to music, playing music, sitting in the back of a pick up truck on a picnic table or lawn chairs drinking while a driver drove us around, boating. You name it, we have done it. Hopefully when I am gone, I will head upstairs to where you are and we can do it all over again. A lot of people put up with us when were being crazy, I think because everyone knew we were having blast. We never did hurt anyone or start any trouble, and that my brother, was what it was all about......Having a BLAST. Remember the Trash Bags we wore one night so we could listen to a band in Annie's and we didn't have our shirts because we just went town to get more cold beverages? I'll never forget that, or anything else we have done. Good times and Bad. Love you Carl
