MITCHELL – Janice Sue Chastain, 82, passed away Monday, July 20, 2026, at her residence.

Born April 3, 1944, in Lawrence County, she was the daughter of Lavere and Mabel L. (Baldwin) Terry.  She married Jerry Lee Chastain on January 16, 1970 and he preceded her in death February 10, 2002.

Janice was a 1962 graduate of Mitchell High School.  She worked at Otis Elevator Company for several years before becoming a Certified Nursing Assistant.  Janice was a CNA for over 30 years, then working for private home health care.  She was a great caregiver and healthcare worker.  Above all, Janice enjoyed life.

Surviving are her children, Deborah “Debbie” Brooks of Mitchell and Linda Lou Hendricks of Mitchell; step-children, Gregory Lee Chastain of Mitchell, Enola Gay (Jimmy) Batchelor of Mitchell, and Kimberly (Douglas) Whitmore of Kansas; grandchildren, Jordan Brooks of Mitchell, Allen Kemple of Mitchell, and Ashley (Matt) Brandt of Missouri; several step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Carmelita (Donnie) Varvel of Mitchell.

Her parents; husband; and siblings, Everett “Pat” Terry, Pearl Ruth Duncan, Roy Terry, and Joseph Terry, preceded her in death.

Graveside service will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 27, at Lawrenceport Cemetery with Reverend Steve Jones officiating.
