MITCHELL – Judith “Judy” Ann Connerley, 84, passed away peacefully Sunday, March 16, 2025, in the presence of family.

Born November 2, 1940, in Greene County, she was the daughter of Estel “Bill” Woodrow and Beulah May (Ashcraft) Howell.  She married Donald L. Connerley on May 11, 1962 and he preceded her in death March 14, 2014.  They were happily married for 51 years.

Judy was a life-long resident of Indiana and a 1958 graduate of Shoals High School.  Judy was a homemaker and mother to four sons, a role she desired since childhood.  She had a talent for baking and decorating cakes for all occasions, a skill she used to bring sweetness and joy to many special occasions.  Judy was a loving, supportive mother and wife, a spectacular cook, and a fierce defender of her family, for she was always ready to stand up for her loved ones.  Her love of music has become deeply ingrained in her four sons, each of whom hold this treasure dear.  She valued her family bonds and worked to foster and strengthen them as the years passed.  As her children grew older, Judy worked at the Mitchell Tribune, and later the Dollar General Store, where she made new friends and found people to chat with – brightening their days as well as hers. Judy was a loving and attentive grandmother to her eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.  Her smile, compassion, colorful stories, and dry wit will be missed.

Surviving are her sons, Donald Scott (Wendy) Connerley of Jeffersonville, Brian Lee Connerley of French Lick, Brett Alan (Shannon) Connerley of Bedford, and Bradly J. (Heather) Connerley of Mitchell; and Maggi (Brandon) Snack of Bedford, whom she raised through her teenage years, always considering her a daughter; grandchildren, Bailey (Alexandria), Kiera, Kendra (Cailen), Drew (Paula), Alexia (Hunter), Jacob, Trevor, and Hunter; great-grandchildren, Maddox, Adalynn, Ellen, and Gwendolyn; sister, Darcus Abel of Loogootee; honorary son and dear family friend, Steve Mathis of Lake Dallas, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Her parents; husband; brother, Bill Howell; great-grandson, Liam Connerley; nephew, David Abel; and brother-in-law, Dale Abel, preceded her in death.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 21, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Brother David Conley officiating.  Burial will be in Connerley Switch Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Thursday and from 9:30 a.m. until the service on Friday at the funeral home.
