MITCHELL Lela Mae Bass, 93, Mitchell, passed away at 4:10 p.m. Monday, November 29, 2010, at the Bliss House in Bedford.

Born January 12, 1917, in Orange County, she was the daughter of Ben and Jessie (Hall) Purlee. She married Paul H. Bass June 1, 1941, and he preceded her in death November 11, 1975.

She was an elementary teacher for Mitchell Community Schools, retiring in 1967, and also taught adult education for Vincennes University at the Mitchell library and also in Bedford. She was a member of the Lawrence County Retired Teachers and a life I.U. Alumnus. Her life-long love of abandoned animals led her to be recognized as the person in the community who would nurture and locate a safe haven for them.

She was a Sunday School teacher and member of the First Christian Church, Fleur-de-Lis Club, past president of Gamma Epsilon chapter of Tri Kappa, and a member of the Bedford Regional Medical Center Auxiliary. For her contributions to education and the community, she was honored as grand marshal of the 2001 Persimmon Festival Parade.

Her parents; husband; and sister, Mary Eversole, preceded her in death.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 2, at the First Christian Church with Pastor Mike Collins officiating. Burial will be in Cresthaven Memory Gardens.

Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday at Chastain Funeral Home and from 10:00 a.m. until the service on Thursday at the church.
