BEDFORD – Lorna Joyce Mundy, 85, passed away Sunday, January 29, 2023, at her residence.
She was born March 3, 1937 in Martin County, Indiana to Raymond and Christine (Burton) Mundy. Her parents were both descendants of early 1800’s Indiana settlers. Joyce was a member of Mitchell First Baptist Church and Huron Baptist Church. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Huron WTK Club, and the Mitchell Fleur De Lis.
Joyce graduated from Huron High School in 1955, attended Indiana University, and graduated from Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in 1959. As an obstetrical nurse, she worked at Dunn Hospital for 10 ½ years before helping open the obstetrical unit at the new Bedford Medical Center in 1970, retiring in 1999 to care for aged parents. She was a registered nurse until 2022 and had been a member of the American Nurses Association for 62 years.
As L. Joyce Mundy, she wrote Souvenirs, for three different newspapers; Mitchell Tribune, Mitchell Time, and Bedford Times Mail, and published seven books of her collections.
She enjoyed painting, drawing and usually had a group to paint and socialize. She loved music and attended frequent jams to hear local musicians. She learned to whistle as a child from her grandparents and would often whistle along with the tunes.
She is survived by sister, Eleanor Mundy and three brothers, Gordon (Dolores) Mundy, Gary (Joelle) Mundy, and Marty (Becky) Mundy. Also surviving are nieces and nephews, Sailor Schofield, Troy Mundy, Stan Mundy, Kent Mundy, Owen (Joelle) Mundy, Reed (Sarabeth) Mundy, Sara Christine Mundy, Justin Mundy, and Nathan (Amanda) Mundy, along with several great nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Her parents and brothers, Graydon Mundy and Stanley Howard Mundy preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 4, at the Huron Baptist Church with Reverend Reggie Clark officiating. Burial will be in Clark Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Friday in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center and from 10:00 a.m. until the service on Saturday at the Huron Baptist Church.
