Born July 25, 1976, in Anchorage, Alaska, he was the son of Harold Mark and Bonnie (Miller) Qualkenbush.  He married Melissa “Missy” Phillips on September 13, 1997 and she survives.

Mark was a 1994 graduate of Mitchell High School.  He worked as a machinist at Regal Beloit and was a small arms engineering technician at NSWC Crane.  Mark loved hunting and fishing.  He enjoyed traveling on his motorcycle and taking trips to Tennessee or going out west with his friends. A talented mechanic and auto body specialist, he restored a 1983 GMC pickup truck and painted it green.  Mark’s friends would say that he was selfless.  He was a devoted son to his parents, husband to his wife, and great father to his children.

His sister, Shannon Gene Qualkenbush; grandparents, Dean and Pauline Qualkenbush, and Raymond and Bettie Miller; and father-in-law, Jake Phillips, preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 5, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Brother Marc Fields officiating.  Burial will be at Port Williams Cemetery.

Words simply cannot offer comfort to those who need it. Some scars never heal. I know I will feel this loss until I feel nothing at all. In school he started out shy and backwards with a sincere kindness one doesn't see very often. We became fast friends and I took him under my wing and fought his fights. Anyone who who messed with him knew they would answer to me. I remember my senior year I had concerns leaving such a gentle soul behind. I told him he would have to make his presence known or his senior year would really suck. That's the only bad advice he listened to. Before my senior year was over he was a well rounded man. He had his father's strength and his mother's heart. He carried himself in a manner that commanded the room. Our friendship had years of absence but when we saw each other usually at our kids ballgames... we instantly picked up where we left off. Watching him interact with his kids you could feel his tender spirit. As we talked there was wisdom and understanding that few have. We went our separate ways year's ago. Always knowing we would see each other sometime and for a few minutes be those two young boys who covered for each other watched out for each other. Never once did he fail me. He was the kind of boy who could tell me no when I was being a bad influence. He loved me enough to tell me I was wrong yet stand beside me regardless. I don't know how many years will pass before we see each again. I do know we will instantly pick up where we left off. I love you brother Until we meet again

Shawn was one of the sweetest guys I ever knew and was a great friend to me through high school. My sincere condolences to his wife and children. I know this loss is immense and no amount of time will heal the pain. My thoughts are with you all. May he rest in peace.
