MITCHELL – Morris E. “Gene” Whalin, 87, passed away at 4:0 p.m. Saturday, October 19, 2013, at St. Vincent Dunn Hospital in Bedford.

Born May 5, 1926, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Christopher and Gladys (Hart) Whalin. He married Martha Taylor July 24, 1954, and she preceded him in death February 1, 2008.

Gene had been employed at Carpenter Body Works and retired from Otis Elevator.  He was a lifelong musician.

He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a 50 year member of American Legion Post No. 250.  He was also a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

His parents; wife; and brother, John Robert “Bob” Whalin, preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, October 23, at Haverly Funeral Chapel and Cremation with Pastor Dan Garland officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery with military honors accorded by American Legion Post No. 250, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, and from 10:00 a.m. until the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
