MITCHELL – Nicoleta Ann Thomas, 83, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, March 10, 2024, at Westview Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Born January 7, 1941, in Indianapolis, she was the daughter of William “Bill the Greek” H. and Mary Ellen (White) Cargas.  She married Rolla “Buddy” Athol Thomas, Jr. on August 16, 1959, and he preceded her in death December 28, 2020. They were married for 61 years.

Nicki was a 1959 graduate of Mitchell High School and had been a member of Phi Beta Si Sorority. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church where she served as Deaconess, sang in the choir, played on the softball team, and led VBS music. Teaching the Navigator’s Class is what she loved most of all. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and a woman of God known for her prayers. Nicki babysat several children throughout the years and loved each one of them. She was known for her delicious Spanish hamburgers served during the Persimmon Festival. Nicki helped her dad for years at Cargas Café.

Survivors include her children, Keely Lynn Thomas of Grove City, Ohio and John Kyle Thomas of Bedford; grandchildren, John (Nicole), Jay, Joseph, Dominic, and Chris Thomas; great grandchildren, William Shepherd and Evelyn Guinn Thomas; in-laws, Steve and Anita Thomas of Mitchell and John Richards of Bedford; and several loving nieces and nephews.

Her parents; in-laws; husband; sons; William Cully Thomas and James Cary Thomas; and sister-in-law, Gail Richards, preceded her in death.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 14 at the First Baptist Church with Reverend Reggie Clark and Pastor Dwight Dunbar officiating.  Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Wednesday, March 13, at Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center and from 10:00 a.m. until the service on Thursday at the church.

Keely and John your mother is a saint in Heaven. I cannot tell you two how many times your mother was at Ford at 3:30 am to get Cully and he had left hours ago and never called her. Prayers to all.

I remember Nicky and Buddy so well! Nicky was always joyful and happy whenever I saw her! Her dad, Bill, would feed me when I was just a kid and my mother would wonder why I wasn’t hungry when I got home! Prayers and condolences for the family!🙏❤

We always went to Aunt Ellen’s house to visit or spend the night at Ellen’s house. They were a lot of great memories when we were kids. I will miss you cousin Nicki very much.

Keely and Kyle, and families: So deeply sorry for the loss of your mother. She was one incredibly loving and amazing woman. May you memories of her bring you comfort as you recall her hugs, the way she smiled, cooked incredible family dinners, and even told family stories. Heaven sure gained an amazing new angel. May she be sitting at the kitchen table in heaven talking with your dad, Cully and Cary❤ Sending much love and support.

Kyle, Keely and family I have many memories with Niki. So many years at FBC, choir, Sunday School, bible study to name a few. We won’t be able to make visitation or the funeral as we are in Texas. Please know that our prayers are with you all.
