Norman Lee Anderson, 88, of Mitchell, passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, January 21, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Born October 4, 1937, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Howard John “Heiny” Anderson and Olivia Maxine (Sanders) Anderson.

Norman grew up in and played football for Mitchell, graduating from Mitchell High School in 1956.  Norman always lived modestly, was honest and trustworthy, and believed in and served the Lord.  He was always helping someone and would give the shirt off his back to anyone.  His lifelong profession was steel fabrication and farming up until just a few years ago.  He was always designing and building something – always working and keeping busy.  His most beautiful creation was his log cabin that he built by hand from his own timber.  He built numerous structures over his lifetime.

Norman will be terribly missed by his family, but they know he is with the Lord and his body has been restored.

Surviving are his children, Gretchen (David McBride) Anderson of Mitchell, Rachel Minton of Paoli, and Jeremiah (Summer) Anderson of Mitchell; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

His parents; sister, Brenda Blake; and son-in-law, Mike Minton, preceded him in death

Funeral service will be at noon Thursday, January 29, at Liberty Baptist Church with Elder Will Ray officiating.  Burial will follow at Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 28 at Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center and from 11:00 a.m. until the service on Thursday at Liberty Baptist Church.

He was always such a happy person when he visited my home. My wife and I enjoyed his company especially when he was with Forest Nodine home teaching. God bless both of them.

I'm just now seeing the obituary of one of the nicest men I ever met. Dale and Louie worked together at Robert's Brass and were very good friends. When Dale and I married in 1959 and lived in an apartment on Warren Street, he would bring Louie home at lunch time to eat ham and beans, fried potatoes and cornbread. Louie would eat until he said he was too full to work. I have wonderful memories of playing cards with your parents and the birth of you two girls After we moved to our farm we lost contact over the years but Louie found us one Sunday afternoon and I was making doughnuts. He ate a plateful and I always meant to make him some more. I've thought about you girls so much and I'm so sorry to hear of your loss He loved you dearly and always so proud of you

One of the nicest men I ever met. I was dating a cousin of Norman's many years ago. We spent many evenings playing cards with Norman and his wife. Very happy memories of those times and others that we spent with Norman.

Rachel Gretchen and Jeremiah, So very sorry to learn of the loss of your dad. I only met him once, but I could tell from that one meeting he was a kind soul. Brad sure thought a lot of Norman, and spoke of him often. His words, "He was a good feller." Love and prayers go to you, and your families. May God wrap His arms of comfort around you.

Been a very long time, had not seen uncle Louie for 30+ years. First let him when he was finishing his log home on the home back side of Mitchell/Orleans.I was working for the Crawford Morris Labor Company. It was AMAZING how large it was and heating AND cooking on a big wood stove! BIG trees laying around for the next project. Humble man, and family. Prayers to you all.

My two cousins and l met Norman and his family while on a genealogy research trip to Indiana. It was a wonderful experience for us to be so welcomed by a family we had never met before. Norman, Gretchen and Rachel really helped us solve many questions about our combined family history. The one thing we really learned, was that we were related to an incredibly kind family and we cherish all the memories we shared. We will truly miss Norman, but he will be with us always in our hearts, and forever in our memories!!

I always called him Mr.A. I helped him at the hog lot feeding pigs and checking the electric fence. Since I moved away from Mitchell I have thought of him often. He was a great friend to me and my husband. Sadly missed but that's only selfishness because I know who holds him now. God bless.

As a member of the 7th - 8th grade football teams in 1954 & 1955 we often were utilized by the varsity to demonstrate the formations of the opposing team. I will always remember the cordial way that Norman treated us and how he made it a positive experience. RIP and condolences to the family.
