MITCHELL – Payot “Pete” Oneal Scheibe II, 87, passed away Sunday, December 17, 2023, at his residence.

Born March 7, 1936, in Mitchell, he was the son of Payot Oneal Sr. and Thelma H. (Cooper) Scheibe.

Pete was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of the American Legion Post No. 250, and active in the Honor Guard.  He was a 1954 graduate of Mitchell High School and member of Mitchell First Christian Church.  Pete retired from the United States Postal Service in 1991 after 30 years; having been Postmaster for 25 years.  He enjoyed hiking around the lake at Spring Mill State Park and country cruising on his motorcycle – and later his Jeep.  He was a fan of both basketball and football.  He loved his dog Gabby and his cat Lucky.

Surviving are his children, Victoria Kathleen Scheibe of Mitchell, Melinda Elizabeth (Bill) Pastors of Florida, and Payot Oneal (Clair Von Handorf) Scheibe III of Colorado; grandchildren, Alex Speer, Adryanna Wedgewood, and Treyton Phillips; three great-grandchildren; and sister, Sharron Gaye (John) Lindsey of Geneva, IN.

His parents; daughter, Julie Dawn Kidd; and mother of the children, Freda Ann Scheibe, preceded him in death.

Graveside service will be at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 20, at Mitchell Cemetery with Brother Max Timbrook officiating.  Military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. -12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center.
