ORLEANS– Rachel Lavena Allen, 81, passed away peacefully Monday, September 23, 2024, at her home.

Born October 1, 1942, in Willow Valley of Martin County, she was the second oldest child of John Paul and Edith (Patton) Jones. Rachel married Kenneth Lee Allen on January 28, 2017 and he survives.

Rachel lived a life of a country girl but her personal flare and sophistication were far from simple.  She was a classy lady with style, sophistication, and a genuine sweetness that won over many a formal and informal setting.

She attended Mitchell Community Schools and later graduated from Indiana Business College.  She was a loving mother, wife, and caregiver.  Her accomplishments included interior design for numerous homes in the Lawrence County and Orange County areas and many years as an Activities Director at Mitchell Manor Nursing Home in Mitchell, Indiana.

She was a faithful servant of God and a member of Grace Tabernacle Church in Orleans, Indiana.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Allen of Orleans; children, Lynnette Fleetwood of Mitchell, Jimmy Dean (Diane) Fleetwood of French Lick, Warren (Alana)  Fleetwood of  Fort Branch, David (Amy) Fleetwood of Hardinsburg, Ryan (Holly) Fleetwood of Mitchell, and Susan (Mike) Backherms of Mitchell; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; siblings,  Brenda “Joyce” Heath of Sacramento, California, Ronald Jones of Hemet, California, Randel Jones of Mitchell, Connie Coulter of Mitchell, Judy Birch of Orleans, Daniel Jones of Bloomington, Penny Hardin of Paoli; several nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Shirley Jones of Mitchell.

Her parents; brothers, Mike Jones and James Jones; and in-laws, Frank Heath, Kay Jones, Judy Jones, Don Birch, Dixie Jones, and Jessie Hardin preceded her in death

Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, September 26, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Pastor Daniel Jones officiating.  Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday at the funeral home.

The family would like to express special gratitude to Kenneth Allen, Stormi Coulter, Grace Tabernacle Church, and Chastain Funeral Home.

I am so sorry to hear of Rachel's passing. She was such a special lady. She always had a smile and cheerful attitude and I remember having lots of laughs with her while working at Mitchell Manor. All caregivers should have a heart like Rachel's. Prayers and thoughts to all the family, I know she will be greatly missed.
