MITCHELL Robert G. Mather, 86, Mitchell, passed away at 8:40 p.m. Saturday, November 13, 2010, at United Methodist Community in Franklin.

Born September 14, 1924, in Mitchell, he was the son of Paul J. and Leola M. (Sims) Mather. He married Betty M. Chastain November 30, 1946, and she preceded him in death October 22, 1993.

Robert retired from Carpenter Body Works with 36 years of service and was a 1942 graduate of Mitchell High School. He was a 50 year member and past master of the Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 F&AM, served two terms on the Mitchell City Council, and was a former Chairman of the Board of Directors at the Bank of Mitchell. He was a Hoosier Uplands board member, volunteered at the Senior Games and was honored as an Older Hoosier of the Year in 1998 by Governor O’Bannon. He also was a tour guide at the West Baden Springs Hotel and a volunteer at Dunn Memorial Hospital. Robert was a life-long member of the Jacob Finger United Methodist Church.

He was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II and a 60 year member of Cecil C. Martin American Legion Post No. 250. He served many years in the American Legion Honor Guard.

His parents and wife preceded him in death.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 17, at Jacob Finger United Methodist Church with Fr. Paul Nugent officiating. Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery with military honors accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Friends may call from 5:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Chastain Funeral Home and from 10:00 a.m. until the service on Wednesday at the church. A Masonic Memorial service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
