SPRINGVILLEIt is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of Scott Gerkin on Sunday, November 8, 2020, at the age of 62 years.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 42 years, Sharon; children, Sarah (Eric) and Samantha (Andrew); grandson, Greyson Hsu; sisters, Sherry (Andy) Theine and Jean Gerkin; mother, Wanda Gerkin; and 12 nieces and nephews.  Scott will also be greatly missed by his friends and family in the racing community.

He was predeceased by his son, Seth and father, William Lawrence Gerkin.

Scott was born in Mitchell, Indiana, on January 17, 1958.  At a young age Scott not only fell in love with his lovely wife, Sharon, he also fell in love with racing.  He found his way to the Kinser Family with sprint car racing and spent many years there as a crew chief and engine builder.  Scott was able to travel the country doing what he loved for the last 30+ years.  Scott enjoyed spending his free time with his family, especially his grandson, Greyson.

Funeral service will be at 11:0 a.m. Thursday, November 12, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center.  Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, and from 10:00 a.m. until the service on Thursday at the funeral home.

When we were a lot younger, whenever dad would take us back to Indiana, sometimes Scott & I would build model race cars. We would even take lighters & burn fenders so it looked like the cars were in wrecks. Loved doing that and I should have figured out where Scott’s passion would be. Scott came to mom’s funeral & I didn’t know there was something wrong with him. He assisted with lifting the casket. With all the tributes Scott has received he was loved by many. I loved him. He will be with his dad son and the rest of the brothers. Rest In peace Scott. Prayers goes to Sharon the girls and the rest of the family.

Had not seen Scott in many, many years. More than likely since our graduation. But that did not stop me from being aware of his great many accomplishments in sprint car racing. He obviously was one of if not the best at what he did. And from the many comments sent from all over the country he was loved and admired by many. Include me in that long list. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Peace, ~pete

Always enjoyed visiting with Scott at the races. I last saw Scott at the Eldora Kings Royal in 2019, and we talked about his Hall of Fame induction. What a great guy. May God give all the family peace and comfort. Rest easy Scott.

To the Gerkin Family - I was deeply saddened on hearing of the passing of Scott . My condolences and sympathy to all his family. So tragic at a relatively young age with plenty of more to give to his family and the sport that he so loved . I was fortunate to get to know Scott in the last 20 or so years thru racing Thanks to Steve Kinser and family. Scott was always nice and welcomed me and my son anytime I stopped in at Steve's race shop or at the race track at numerous races. He was fortunate to do for many years what he aspired to do and loved and became one of the best and gained the respect of his peers across the racing community . Scott will be sorely missed by all that knew him - may he rest in peace and his memory be an example of what you can be with hard work and dedication. Joe Elliott and Family
