MITCHELL – Sue Ann Fleener, 85, passed away Sunday, January 4, 2026, at her residence.
Born October 10, 1940, in Medora, she was the daughter of Stephen Elbert and Dorothy (Shanks) Chastain. Sue married John T. Fleener on December 23, 1961 and he preceded her in death September 4, 2008.
Sue was a 1958 graduate of Orleans High School and received her degree in nursing. “Sue the Nurse,” as she was known, was a registered nurse, specializing in wound care, geriatrics, and home health. To that end, she helped establish Hoosier Upland Home Health and travelled all around several counties to help get it off the ground. She was a past vice president of the South Central Association of the Visually Impaired. Sue was an avid painter, especially oil paints, and was a student of Marilyn Morgan. She also crocheted hats and headbands and cheerfully gave them away. Sue was a member of the Lost River Primitive Baptist Church for 72 years and shined her light for Jesus.
Surviving are her daughters, Cynthia Louise Brooking of Mitchell, Penny Sue (Juan) Ingram of Highland, and Rebecca Jane (Marlin) Patton of Bedford; grandchildren, Timothy Wayne Moody, Terri Nicole Mathers, Katrina Jo Stancombe, Callie Amanda Gaballa, Maggie Sue King, Alyssa Hildum, Adam Jacob Roach, Tayler Brooking, Dylan Cole Patton, and Stephen Miles Ingram; 17 great-grandchildren, plus one on the way; siblings, Michael Paul (Bev) Chastain of Arlington, Sarah Elisabeth Chastain of Livonia, and Steven Ray (Sandra) Chastain of Celestine; and several nieces and nephews.
Her parents; husband; grandson, Sheldon Lee Gearlds; siblings, Joy Lee Motsinger, Oliver Gordon Chastain, Roland Dean Chastain, and David Keith Chastain; and sons-in-law, Michael Brooking and Henry “Hank” South, preceded her in death.
Funeral service will be at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, January 10, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center. Cremation will follow with burial at Lost River Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery at a later date.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until the time of the service on Saturday at the funeral home.
