BLOOMINGTON Erwin “Lee” Root, 87, passed away at 1:20 a.m. Saturday, October 8, 2011, at Garden Villa in Bedford.

Born February 12, 1924, in Mitchell, he was the son of Ernest Lee and Helen Gladys (Erwin) Root. He married Rosabel Baker September 13, 1946, and she preceded him in death February 27, 2000. His second marriage was to Lois (Melvin) Slaughter Kendall on December 3, 2005.

He was an electrical engineer, graduated from Tri-State College, and retired from Indiana University. He graduated from Mitchell High School in 1942, and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mitchell and the Experimental Aviation Association, Bloomington Chapter. In the 1950’s he was a photographer and engraver for the Daily Herald-Telephone.

Lee was a U. S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion.

His parents; first wife, Rosabel; son, Aaron Lee Root; brother, James Kenneth Root; and half brother, William E. Williams, preceded him in death.

Graveside service will be at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 11, at Mitchell Cemetery with Bro. Marc Fields officiating. Military honors will be accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107.

Friends may call from 5:00 8:00 p.m. on Monday at Chastain Funeral Home.
