MITCHELL – Lannie Ray Blackerby, 75, passed away Friday, January 27, 2023, at his residence.
Born September 13, 1947, in Bedford, he was the son of Ray Edward “T-Bone” and Betty Jean (Shoults) Blackerby. He married Sharon Sue Keane, December 30, 1966 and she survives. They were married for 56 years.
Lannie was a 1965 graduate of Mitchell High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War Era, serving in Germany. Lannie worked at General Motors and retired after 40 years. He held a leadership role with the UAW Local No. 440 as a Veterans Committee Member. Lannie was a member of the Mitchell Masonic Lodge No. 228 F.&A.M., American Legion Post No. 250, Sons of the American Legion, and Mitchell Outdoor Sportsman Club. Lannie was an honorary Kentucky Colonel. He enjoyed many sports and he was a master of all trades, and was proud of the time he once got a hole-in-one. He also traveled with a bowling league and was a huge music fan. Later in life he found an affinity for metal detecting and RC cars. He enjoyed life to the fullest.
Surviving are his wife, Sue Blackerby of Mitchell; children, Shannon Ray (Shawnya) Blackerby of Cass, West Virginia and Jessica Sue (Nicholas) Healey of Bloomington; grandchildren, Olivia Soller, Emily Tomlinson, Nicholas Blackerby, and Oliver Healey; great-grandchildren, Phoenix Tomlinson, Willow Tomlinson, and Emmer Soller; siblings, Vicki (Brian) Rainey of Bedford and Becky (Mike) Roberts of Salem.
His parents preceded him in death.
Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 1, in the Memorial Chapel of Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Lee Hupp officiating. Military rites will be accorded by American Legion Post No. 250 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9107. Burial will be at Mitchell Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday and from 9:30 a.m. until the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
