MITCHELL — Rhonda Joyce Atkinson, 56, passed away Sunday, January 24, 2016, at Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Born May 26, 1959, in Jasper, she was the daughter of Leroy and Eunice Leona (Huntman) Hupp.  She married Patrick Lee Atkinson November 12, 2006.

She was employed at the Jay-C Deli.  Rhonda graduated from Mitchell High School in 1977 and was a Girl Scout leader for 22 years.  She did the 60 mile Susan G. Komen Three Day Walk.  Rhonda was a member and choir director of the Mitchell Presbyterian Church, served on the worship committee, and was a former elder and deacon.

Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 30, in the Mitchell Presbyterian Church with Reverend Daniel Watson officiating.  Burial will be in Mitchell Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Friday at Chastain Funeral Home & Cremation Center and from 9:30 a.m. until the service on Saturday at the church.

    It has been many years since talking with Rhonda but I will always remember her from years ago when we were elementary school age. We had several of the same friends and attended Brownies/Girl Scouts together and a couple of birthday parties. Rhonda was such a fun personality.     My first memory of Rhonda is us both at our church camp, Camp Pyoca. It was a family day, we were all doing and trying out things. Rhonda and I decided to take a rowboat out on the water. Oh, did we ever get ourselves in a jam. Neither one of us knew how to row a boat!!! We were stuck going in circles until Lee and my dad came out to rescue us! My heartfelt prayers go out to all of her family and those who loved and knew her. Soar with the angels Rhonda.

    Dearest Hupps, We are so sorry and are praying for you and DEEPLY grieving one of my best friends in school. We walked home everyday and swung our purses around our bodies and laughed on the corner. She died on our 35th wedding anniversary and she had sung at our wedding!
